Rya rugs are beautiful traditional woollen textiles from Scandinavia. They are known for their distinctive long, shaggy pile, which ranges from 1 to 3 inches. These remarkable rugs have a rich history, dating back to the 15th century when they were first crafted as heavy bed coverings to provide warmth and comfort against the harsh Nordic climate. Over the years, they have evolved into lighter, more colourful decorative pieces, showcasing the artistic spirit and creativity of the region.
The name "rya" is derived from a village in southwest Sweden, and these rugs are produced using a technique similar to the Ghiordes knot, resulting in a wonderfully textured, double-sided fabric with various vibrant colours and patterns. Historically, ryas have played many roles in people's lives; sailors and fishermen used them for protection against the cold waters, served as warm bedding for peasant families, and ultimately transformed into decorative items that symbolised social status. Each rya rug carries a piece of history and a story of the people who cherished them, reflecting their practical origins and evolution into beloved works of art.

The repeating gul motifs, known as elephant foot medallions, are arranged in harmonious rows, accompanied by elegant secondary motifs like stars and floral designs. With intricate geometric patterns adorning the borders, each rug tells a story of tradition and beauty, often over 100 years old, dating back to the late 19th to early 20th century.

Yomud rugs are a type of Turkoman carpet woven by the Yomud tribe, one of the prominent Turkoman tribes in Central Asia. These rugs originate from Turkmenistan, northern Iran, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan, where the Yomud people have historically lived as nomadic herders and traders. Like other Turkoman groups, such as the Tekke and Ersari, the Yomud tribe developed a unique weaving tradition, utilising handspun wool and natural dyes. Their rugs served as trade items and essential household goods, including tent decorations, storage bags, and ceremonial pieces.
Today, antique Yomud rugs from the 19th and early 20th centuries are highly collectable, especially those featuring fine knotting, soft wool, and well-preserved natural dyes.

An Antique American Sarouk Rug is a hand-knotted Persian-style rug from Iran. It is woven explicitly in the Sarouk region, which is known for producing fine Persian rugs. These rugs were tailored for the American market during the early 20th century, particularly between 1900 and 1940. They are celebrated for their durability and striking floral patterns, which feature elaborate sprays and vine motifs covering the entire surface without an open field. Woven initially with softer colours, many of these rugs were chemically re-dyed in the United States to enhance their appeal, resulting in vibrant shades of deep red or rose that became highly sought after in American homes. The typical palette includes a warm red or burgundy as the dominant colour, accented by navy blue, ivory, and green. Due to their rich colours and elegant designs, American Sarouk rugs gained immense popularity in the early 1900s and are now highly collectable among interior designers and rug enthusiasts alike.
