THE DVARAPALA OF HOYSALA 😊

Once called ‘Dwarasamudra’ the Hoysala capital was sacked twice, by the marauding army of the Delhi Sultan, Ala-ud-din Khilji under the command of his famed General, Malik Kafur in the 14th century CE. After this the Hoysalas deserted the capital which came to be known as Halebidu, meaning ‘Old Town’. All that survives of the glorious past are a few exquisitely carved temples. This six feet high dvarapalas wearing jewelry on both sides of the doorways is sheer excellence of Hoysala architecture. Each has four hands (two broken, others damaged), wear jatamakuta, have third eye and fangs, and stand in S-shaped tribhanga pose. They hold Shiva icons such as damaru, cobra, trisula and others. They were defaced at some point. Attempts were made in the 20th century to trim, restore and re-polish the dvarapala faces, but it created a disproportionate artificial look.

With a stunning view of the Mehrangarh Fort sits the royal cenotaph built by Maharaja Sardar Singh II. The Jaswant Thada is carved in a white sheet of marble, holding a perfect contrast to the red sandstone in the vicinity of the complex. Jaswant Thada is a monument that celebrates the love and respect that a son held for his father. Just like death, mourning and grief is represented in India through the colour white. This white cenotaph is thus a beautiful but remorseful representation of the Maharaja’s death. The cenotaph is festooned with beautifully and intricately carved jaalis, which are thin enough to have light pass through them. This often illuminates the entire monument at sunset, in beautiful shades of shining yellow and white. The play of natural light in the monument rules out the use of any artificial light throughout the day; highlighting the technical capabilities of its craftsmen.

Jaswant Thada is the perfect representation of Rajputana architecture, with influences from the Taj Mahal in Agra.

It is carved in pure white marble, just like the Taj. It has been designed out of love and overlooks Mehrangarh Fort just as the Taj Mahal overlooks the Agra Fort. It is beautifully set upon a plinth made out of red sandstone by a lake which is similar to the Taj Mahal’s placement by the river Yamuna. The similarities between the two are only crossed over in a subtle form of architecture. While onion domes and minarets are the essence of Mughal architecture, the chhatris and intricate latticework celebrate Rajputana architecture at Jaswant Thada. Often regarded as a symbol of affluence and pride, these semi-open canopies are carved out of marble and placed above the cenotaph as a respectful ode to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II.
