Big news for Downtown Frederick! A new small-scale food hall is on the way, thanks to an exciting collaboration between Downtown Frederick Partnership, McClintock Distilling and The City of Frederick!

Located across from McClintock Distilling, this 6,000 sq ft vacant space will be transformed into:
🍴 Four food stalls
🍸 A bar operated by McClintock Distilling
🧀 A market stall featuring local goods
📍 A vibrant community gathering space

With grant funding from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, this initiative will provide an accessible entry point for early-stage culinary entrepreneurs into Downtown Frederick's competitive commercial real estate market, expand and diversify business ownership and offerings in the community and revitalize a historic commercial space.

🔨 Construction begins late summer 2025
📢 Vendor applications launch later this year

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting project!

Honoring one of Downtown Frederick’s first woman entrepreneurs.🌟

In 1925, artist Helen Smith (1894-1997) opened The Palette Shop. Having displayed a talent for painting and drawing at an early age, Helen secured a scholarship and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art. After returning to Frederick, Helen joined the art faculty at Hood College. Deciding to strike out on her own path, Helen opened the Palette Shop and began accepting commercial art jobs such as designing covers for the Frederick News-Post’s annual year books. She designed a logo for the city’s bicentennial celebration featuring the Clustered Spires which was later reworked into Frederick’s official seal.

In 1935, Helen moved her Palette Shop to this location on North Market Street and continued the business for five years before moving it for a final time to her residence on Braddock Mountain. The Palette Shop sold original works of art by Helen and a group of women she employed to duplicate her designs on porcelain, toleware, lampshades, jewelry, and other items. Helen found limitless inspiration in the local landscape and history and her paintings contributed to the proliferation of our city’s landmarks including the Clustered Spires, Schifferstadt, Baker Park, Jug Bridge, the Barbara Fritchie House, and others.
